Doris Day releases new album at the age of 87

The former Hollywood star’s comeback record features songs by the Beach Boys and Joe Cocker

By Jonathan Harwood

Post-war Hollywood star Doris Day is making a musical comeback - at the age of 87. The actress and singer has not appeared in a film since 1968 and her last album (a greatest hits compilation) came out in 1994. She is now best known for her work as an animal rights campaigner.

But her latest offering as a singer, My Heart, comes out next month. It is a compilation of unreleased songs produced by her only son Terry Melcher, who died in 1994 aged 62. He was influential in the west coast music scene of the 1960s, working with The Byrds and Beach Boys, and the selection of tunes on the album may surprise those who associate Day with songs like Que Sera, Sera and Move Over Darling. Included on the new record are a version of Joe Cocker's You Are So Beautiful and the Beach Boys' Disney Girls.

Many of the songs were first recorded in the 1980s for her shortlived TV show, but never saw the light of day. They were subsequently remastered by Melcher before he died, but were gathering dust before Sony approached her about releasing a new album.

Vinyl Records Making a Comeback

By: Nick Hausen

CARBONDALE -- Many of us remember when listening to music meant putting a record on the turntable. In the past 25 years or so, vinyl has been edged out by compact discs and digital music players. Now, records are making some noise in the music business again. An increase in vinyl sales started to emerge several years ago.

"It's going up probably about 50% a year and it really started about five years ago," said Plaza Records Owner Kim Curlee.

It's Official: Reunited Original Lineup Of BLACK SABBATH Working On New Album

BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi has confirmed to Birmingham Mail that the band's original lineup has reunited and is rehearsing for a tour and new studio album.

Iommi and singer Ozzy Osbourne wrote new material in June for a record that will be released next year.

"We're really looking forward to it and I think the stuff we've been writing is really good," said Iommi. "It's more back to the old original stuff."

He added that the reunion has been kept under wraps for some time.

"It's all been very hush-hush. Ozzy's been the worst at trying to hold it back. He's doing a lot of TV and he's being asked stuff about a reunion and he's going, 'Well, I never say never.' He told me, 'I don't know what to say."

Boston’s New Album Will Feature the Late Brad Delp on Vocals

According to a new statement from classic rock favorites Boston, the band is almost done — specifically, “nearly 85% complete” — with work on a new studio album that will feature vocals from late singer Brad Delp.

The upcoming album would be the first new music from the group since the tragic 2007 suicide of Delp, who sang lead vocals on all of Boston’s classic hits, and their first new album since 2002's ‘Corporate America,’ the sound of which represented a radical departure for the band.

INDIE-DANCE POP ROCKERS
THE HUNDRED DAYS RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM “REALLY?”
TODAY, AUGUST 16, 2011

SIZZLING VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE “SEX U” TURNS HEADS, GRABS ATTENTION ACROSS THE INTERNET

TOUR DATES CONTINUE TO BE CONFIRMED THROUGHOUT THE US

Whatever happened to good ole fashioned bombast? We thought it was gone until we heard “Sex U.” The lead-off track on San Francisco’s The Hundred Days’ debut is a rare glimpse into a dying breed of freaky dance-rock songs that are awesome, above all, because they are big and fun and cheeky.”
–RCRD_LBL

“The single, ‘Sex U’, is a freak-out dance-rock anthem for late nights, models, booze, and sexy excesses,”
–AltSounds

"Sex U is a powerful dance hit that makes you feel...dirty, but in a good way!"
–Beautiful Buzzz

Some young bands search for their sound for years, trying many different things in hopes of finding just the right combination. But for San Francisco-based band The Hundred Days, the four twenty-something year old musicians found themselves able to discover and perfect their sound in just one-hundred days and nights by locking themselves in a house until they hit upon the perfect formula. Their debut album, “Really?”, to be released August 16, 2011, is a collection of critically-acclaimed indie-rock gems that are as catchy as they are clever and sonically arresting.

"Really?" is the latest project from the production team of Michael Patterson (Beck, Ladytron, She Wants Revenge) and Nic Jodoin (Great Northern). With driving rhythms, soaring guitars, textural keyboards and powerful vocal melodies, The Hundred Days push indie/alt rock in new directions. Drawing from a variety of influences (post punk, alternative, britpop), the band's familiar, yet intrinsically unique sound has been compared to The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Radiohead as well as contemporary rockers Franz Ferdinand, The Bravery and The Killers. A moody, dynamic indie rock band, The Hundred Days showcase tight musicianship complemented by razor-sharp pop writing capabilities with both sophistication and urgency.

Their first single from the album, “Sex U” and accompanying video has attracted an enormous buzz on the internet, with NME naming it one of the “10 Best Free MP3s”. The video, directed by David Dutton, follows the band on a wild night out on the town where the ladies they meet aren’t exactly what they seem. Press has been clamoring for it after it premiered on Baeble, followed by a featured Video of the Day on Spinner and Consequence of Sound, among other sites.

Explaining the band's ever-evolving sound on the new album, lead vocalist and guitarist Jonathan Smith said, "Over time, we have come to favor live shows where people are dancing. Hence we seem to be moving in a more dance-able direction in the studio, as well."

"We definitely all share a love for English bands - from the Beatles onward - and mostly agree on what we think sounds good," explains Jimmy Chen, guitarist and keyboardist. "But, this band is democratic in every way. There are a lot of different ideas floating around which often clash. The tension adds to the sound.

The band has toured extensively across the U.S. as well as the UK, and has played major festivals and showcases including SXSW, the CMJ Marathon in NYC, Noise Pop Festival and the BFD Festival at Shoreline Amphitheatre alongside Moby, MGMT and Pennywise, among others. The band has scheduled a West Coast tour for August of 2011 with plans for a full US tour to be announced soon.
